M9 Connectors — Male vs Female Comparison Guide
The first step in selection is knowing what plugs in and what gets plugged into. A comparison based on Octopusconn's public M9 documentation.

1. Male vs Female: Pins and Sockets
In industrial connectors, "male / female" refers to the physical mating relationship , not to electrical polarity.
- Male Male connector : carries protruding pins (Pin) ; does the inserting; pins are visible on the face.
- Female Female connector : carries recessed sockets (Socket) ; does the receiving; holes are visible on the face.
2. M9 Key Parameters (identical for male & female)
- 9 mm thread diameter · A-coding (keyed) · compliant with IEC 61076-2-104
- 2–8 positions · IP67 protection (IP68 on some custom versions) · operating temperature -40℃~+85℃
- Mating cycles ≥500 · rated 125 V / 1–4 A (decreases with position count)
- Housing: nickel-plated brass or engineering plastic · contacts: gold-plated copper
- Positioning: compact solution between M8 and M12; approx. 30% smaller than M12
3. Core Comparison: Male vs Female
| Dimension | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Contact | Protruding pin (Pin) | Recessed socket (Socket) |
| Typical role | Often cable / movable end | Often fixed / panel end |
| Electrical | Same as matching female | Same as matching male |
| Mating rule | Must mate with female; no male-to-male | Must mate with male; no female-to-female |
4. Real Model Cross-Reference (A-coding, XX = 2–8 positions universal)

In the model codes, XX stands for the full 2–8 position range; exact position-specific models are subject to the official product center and the rating plate on the actual part.
5. Current Rating by Position Count
| Positions | 2–3P | 4–5P | 6–8P |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rated current | 4 A | 3 A | 1 A |
| Wire gauge | AWG24 / 0.25mm² | AWG24 / 0.25mm² | AWG26 / 0.14mm² |
6. Four Questions for Selection
- Match positions: male and female must have the same position count (e.g. 4P to 4P); don't waste pins or force-merge on fewer.
- Match form: for cable extension choose cable-to-cable male/female pairs; for panel interfaces choose front/rear panel-mount versions.
- Protect by environment: dry indoor doesn't need IP67; outdoor/spray/oil requires IP67 or above, plus oil and vibration resistance.
- Material by environment: high temperature and oil call for nickel-plated brass housing + gold-plated pins; avoid ordinary plastic shells and plain copper pins that oxidize.
7. Safety Notes
- Do not mate/unmate under load; live operation risks electric shock and arcing.
- Circuits with hazardous voltage must be installed/supervised by trained personnel, with protection against accidental disconnection.
- Tighten with the proper tool to the correct torque; do not energize before fully locked; IP67/68 plugs are not for long-term immersion, and outdoor use needs additional corrosion protection.
Quick Reference
- Male = pin, Female = socket; electrically symmetrical, only form differs
- Must be one male + one female; same coding (A to A) to screw together
